All about the Mantras

What is a Mantra?

The Sanskrit word Mantra can be broken down into two parts: 'man' which means to continuously think and 'tra' which means to lift, to protect, to raise. In other words a Mantra is an instrument of the mind, a thought way, that raises our vibration, purifies and protects our mind.

The chanting of Mantra purifies our mind and the vibration of the Mantra raises our vibration to a higher, finer quality.

Through the chanting of Mantra the macro cosmos (universe) filters into the micro cosmos (the body), the infinite cosmos comes into the mind and through the speech comes out again.

By Mantra (notice how Sanskrit nouns always start with a capital letter) we mean the Sanskrit chants originated from the Vedas, the ancient Indian scriptures. These ancient Mantras carry a high vibration and energy. A Mantra can be thought of as a seed for energizing an intention. Mantras when spoken or chanted direct the healing power of Prana (see previous blog post).

There are several topics relating to Mantras like: types (material desires, to gain power, raise consciousness), nature (warming, cooling, universal), effect (to defend, to achieve desire, liberation), reasons for chanting (for peace, to overpower, to protect), form (writing, speaking, whispering, silent repetition, just remembering the vibration of the Mantra) which this blog is too small to go into. I will explain in more detail some of the most well known Mantras like OM, So Ham and my personal favorite, the Gayatri Mantra, in future blog posts.

A mantra (with lower case) can also be a continuous affirmation we say to ourselves. Now this can be a positive affirmation we repeat over and over, such as 'I can do this',' I am good enough' and have a positive effect on us or it can be a negative mantra such us 'I can't do this', 'I am not good enough' which also has an effect on us, and yes you have guessed it, it is not a positive one. So please be mindful of your Mantra and your mantra.
